So, how does love feel?

How does love feel?: I was invited by carpe diem magazine to illustrate and define this big question. I wanted to create an answer that was applicable to love in all its shapes — romantic love, love between family, friends, and self love.

/ ¿Cómo se siente el amor?: Tuve el privilegio de ser invitada por la revista carpe diem para ilustrar y definir esta gran pregunta. Quise crear una respuesta que fuera aplicable al amor en todas sus formas: amor romántico, amor de familia, de amigos y amor propio.

And it goes like this: Love for me means bonding, discovery and blossoming. In my illustration one can see movement and waves because love is a space of freedom and acceptance, where you can be yourself and you are allowed to grow. The flowers that sprout from the face are a symbol of that growth, and represent this quote by James Baldwin: “Love takes off the masks that we fear we cannot live without and know we cannot live within”.

/ Y dice así: Para mí, el amor significa vínculo, descubrimiento y floración. En mi ilustración se puede ver movimiento y ondulaciones porque el amor es un espacio de libertad y aceptación, donde puedes ser tú mismo y se te permite crecer. Las flores que brotan de la cara son un símbolo de ese crecimiento, y representan esta cita de James Baldwin: “el amor quita las máscaras sin las cuales tememos no poder vivir y dentro de las cuales sabemos que no podemos vivir tampoco”.

Many thanks to Dani and Flora for inviting me to this project, where I had the creative freedom to interpret something that is essential in my relationship with other people and with myself — defining it visually and in writing felt like a statement and, at the same time, a reminder. Living Beyond Borders

I feel SO honored that I got to illustrate the book jacket for “Living Beyond Borders” for Penguin Teen. An anthology celebrating the Mexican-American experience, la identidad chicana, with short stories, essays, poems, and more. It was particularly moving to create this cover in a time where the Trump Administration had done so much to damage this identity with harmful rhetorics and policies: hate crimes have risen steadily since 2016, forcing people to hide their culture and language. Therefore, this book is an act of resistance, celebration and an invitation for young readers to embrace a beautiful mixed heritage. Rebel Girls

Very happy announce that I illustrated three portraits for Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls: 100 Immigrant Women Who Changed the World written by Elena Favilli, as Rebel Girls is a project that I have long admired. The book is illustrated by 70 female artists from 29 countries. This volume recognizes women who left their birth countries for a multitude of reasons — being a migrant myself, this is a very special project. Thanks AD Giulia Flamini!

/ Muy feliz de anunciar que ilustré tres retratos para Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls: 100 mujeres inmigrantes que cambiaron el mundo, escrito por Elena Favilli, ya que Rebel Girls es un proyecto que he admirado durante mucho tiempo. El libro está ilustrado por 70 artistas femeninas de 29 países. Este volumen reconoce a las mujeres que dejaron sus países de nacimiento por una multitud de razones. Which Way is Home process

I had the honor of illustrating the book cover of Which Way Is Home? by Maria Kiely and published by Penguin Books Young Readers in the US. A riveting story about a family escaping Czechoslovakia after the 1948 coup d’état — based on the author’s own family history. Thanks to Kristie Radwilowicz for the wonderful art direction and creative process, which I’m sharing in this post.

La fascinante historia de una familia que escapó de Checoslovaquia después del Golpe de Praga en 1948, basada en la propia historia familiar de la autora. Gracias a Kristie Radwilowicz por la maravillosa dirección de arte y el proceso creativo, que comparto en este post.

**Selected thumbnail and palette:** After analyzing different proposals, we decided on one that used the idea of the forest as frame and almost theatrical setting, portraying one side of the family on the cover and the father on the other side. The colors were chosen to convey that sense of nature, depth and also the tension in the story.

Lutea

My piece Lutea, commissioned for Herbarium Vagans, a traveling and outdoor group exhibition between Italy and Switzerland organized by Associazione Musei d’Ossola and Asilo Bianco. Artists were invited to interpret a herb from the Alps, mixing botany and art. The works are displayed outside, between historic buildings, and will be visible in the historic centers of Santa Maria Maggiore and Domodossola until 30th August, 2020. In September it will move to Orta San Giulio and later in Switzerland, in the Canton of Valais.

/ Mi pintura Lutea, encargada para Herbarium Vagans, una exposición colectiva itinerante y al aire libre entre Italia y Suiza organizada por Associazione Musei d’Ossola y Asilo Bianco. Se invitó a artistas a interpretar una hierba medicinal de los Alpes, mezclando botánica y arte. Las obras se exponen en el exterior, entre edificios históricos y serán visibles en los centros históricos de Santa Maria Maggiore y Domodossola hasta el 30 de agosto de 2020. En septiembre se trasladará a Orta San Giulio y más tarde a Suiza, en el cantón de Valais.
